Discipline in the classroom

I wanted to begin this reflection with the lines written above because it reflects the heart of Freire’s tenth letter: the discipline, how it must be taken and handled into the classroom.  At the same time, these words reminded me of my first days as a ‘teacher’.

When I got into this reading, I thought about the connection between ‘discipline’ and my ‘classrooms’. Some words, or images, came to my mind: students sat on their chairs paying attention, students talking while I’m explaining the lesson, students respecting their classmates, students making fun of other classmates, etc. Experience talks! And this is the contrast between disciplined and misbehaving students. Then I wondered “What do I mean by discipline?” In general terms, discipline is acting, taking steps or following rules to achieve a purpose, or simply, because there are reasons to act or behave like that. In the educational context, I think, discipline is not just a matter of keeping the order or having students under control, but it is making students aware of the importance of following rules and how it benefit themselves and others.

How is Freire’s perception about ‘discipline’ connected to my experience in the classroom? To explain this, I will go back to my first days of teaching.  There were times my lessons turned into a mess because of ‘lack of discipline’  from some students. After I reflected on this, I became aware of how ‘misbehaviour affects the learning process of students and, consequently, I understood the importance of setting rules for the classroom and make them be respected.
“Rules are important because they regulate behavior, set the limits, and help to create a sense of fairness among individuals.” This is what I read once and I think it relates enough to the topic in matter. On the other hand, Freire talks, somehow, about proposing but not imposing. Then, what do we have? Rules introduced to students as a proposal, in which they have the freedom to express their agreement or disagreement about it, or even better, in which they can add rules they think they are going to benefit from.  Once students know the rules, they know there are limits, too.

To sum up, I take some words from Freire’s perspective about ‘discipline’: firm but not authoritarian, and students’ freedom to participate (democracy) in the framework for the sense of ‘discipline’ in their classrooms. This is the connection I find between Freire’s perspective about discipline and mine’s viewed from my short experience as a teacher.

The more I know, the more I grow...

The more I know, the more I grow...

Theory and practice must hold hands, this is the principal idea from Freire´s last words. Growing and knowledge have to do the same in students’ lives. Is not possible to grow without any dose of knowledge as the similar way as is not possible to know without any sign of growth. Growth in any sense. We as teachers can measure students´ development with grades and numbers but what about their personal growth? The way they behave, think, show their emotions and create relationships with the teacher are important to emphasize too.

Going back to the practice, I do not how many times I have said “sense of possibility” to my students. It does not matter the amount of examples I have shown, they have to experience those values to comprehend their real meaning. Here it remains the “practice” of  Freire´s words.

Talking about the theoretical knowledge, is necessary to promote critical-thinking in order to generate curious and hungry students for new knowledge. We the teachers making presence in front of the classroom spend most of the time presenting topics and the knowledge we pretend to transmit to the students. When it is students´ turn to discover and share new things with the rest of the classroom, it is incredible the level of their works.

I sent invitations to parents of my “research and methodology workshop” class to be present at their sons´ final projects reports. Students had the theory needed to follow the scientific method and put it into practice creating their own project. They chose interesting problems from their communities to be investigated. At the end of the presentations I listened to parents who had no idea how incredible their sons could be, some could not believe the quality of projects they saw and some others said they have never been invited to see the works of their sons.

Joining the theory and practice my students follow to create their projects and adding the recognition from their parents, and the change in students´ confidence and attitude they showed there are no more words to say:

I know how hard it is, but my sense of possibility reminds me every minute that in this process I will get a reward at the end of the day. I am learning and growing as the same way my students do.

Discipline

Discipline...

Although I knew all the challenges I was about to face once I arrive to my assigned school, I had never imagined that this little word “discipline” it would be my nightmare.
Discipline in all senses. Students that do not study, teachers that do not teach, authorities that do not help when needed, parents which do not worry about sons education. How can I control the contagious immobility from all people around me? I was about to freak out. During my first days in the school I had to deal with students who had never been able to accomplish one single task: doing a homework, making a summary, reading a book, etc. These students were swimming in their gigantic bubble of “there is no consequence if I do not do anything”.
At this point, I learned that it is ok not to do anything. Teachers demand commitment and effort from the students but there is certain number of students that can failed in a subject, there is no number of students to be expelled because of their poor development inside the school. Many other situations which are not under teachers control but that make me feel sometimes as I were fighting alone against all kind of educational politics.
I found interesting Freire´s last letter. All the things that have been worrying me are concerned with this part of the book.  I emphasize the values within discipline.

Liberty, which is difficult to manage. The teacher is not the only person who can decides what happens inside the classroom. Students are allowed to do it too and teachers´ work is just to authorize and manage in which situations students´ decision-making is possible.
Liberty without fundaments goes to licentiousness. I remember many occasions in which students do not want to do the homework just because they do not want to. I have said that homework is the students´ opportunity to practice once again their knowledge. And in one of those situations I said to one of my students. –“if you give me a coherent argument about why you do not want to do the homework, It will not be problem or consequence. This students used my words to respond to me –“I do not want to practice my knowledge again in my notebook, I am going to practice my knowledge when it needs to be practiced” A valid argument for him, not for me because my authoritarian brain is telling me he has to do the homework anyway.

Responsibility, respect and democracy that I must show to differentiate what it is wrong and what it is right. Freire talks about the coherent and careful human beings must be with what we say and what we do. Complaining and taking actions with the things we do not agree. Being able to say which things are bothering me and what I am doing to change complains into actions. The more respect examples I show, the more democratic I become.

Disciplina...

Soy feliz
Cuan do bendo mio conejos y tengo dinero.
Cuan do juego al fubol.
Cuan do boy alos bailes.

What about……?

What about……
The Cultural identity and education and the concrete and theoretical context?

Differentiated contexts by the way of living, thinking and behaving. That is all I have being in contact with since day one immerged in the world of teaching-learning processes.
I remember my first day of work in the public elementary “Carmen Millán”. A school where economic status can be noticeable for the eyes of the new English teacher but not for the eyes of the rest of teachers working there since the establishment of the school. The difference was even more perceptible when I watched the teacher of History to grade some students´ homeworks. She graded the beautiful, expensive and well-made work of Brandon with a ten while the homework of Catalina was graded with eight. Catalina´s task was not the most beautiful work I have ever seen, but it was full of creativity, glue was everywhere, and she made “los niños héroes” look like really young kids. I was wondering why Catalina has an eight and Brandon deserved a ten. I said to the history teacher that Brandon´s work looks professional but it was impossible that he had made it, and this is what she told me:
“I know Brandon´s mom made Brandon´s homework but I cannot give a low score because she is part of the parental committee and she gives money to the school when it is needed”
And why Catalina does not deserve a ten if her homework is product of her own creativity? – I asked.
“Because it looks ugly and I do not like her, she is rude with her classmates and she always smells disgusting”

This is the perfect example of intolerance, and the wrong choice for that person when she chose her profession.
The teacher that has the passion and love for her/his profession should know what is going on in the world of each student, the reason of his and her actions and within this specific example, we cannot use prejudices and give grades just because.
The labor of a good teacher is practicing justice every day in her/his life and get students involved inside this moral value so they can practice it later on in their lives.

Now that I am working in senior high-school, ideological issues are different, difficult and at some point I have thought all most impossible to change. The challenge lies in the way I have tried to make my students feel and understand that we can be at the same level. I can learn from them and they can learn from me, as part of my work, but without losing the proper respect we deserve from each other. Students get confused with this situations because they are used to feel inferior to teachers and all they have lived is the fear to the teacher that has the power to choose, to punish and to yell.

I do not like the language (bad words) my students use in class, but it is part of their culture. They were not punished or corrected since the beginning of their instruction in other schools. Even they feel excused saying that they talk every day at home like this and if it is not a problem for their parents why it has to be a problem for me when others teachers allow and use that words at school. -“It is all about values and respect” I have said many times to my students. They seem to get it and I am being constant, I do not care if they feel attacked but they have to understand the importance of behave properly in some situations that need the seriousness of a proper language.

Every student is a different world and four months have not been enough to meet each student background. At least I know part of the general circumstances they share in common and it is useful when it is necessary to land ideas and reflections that can be significant for them in their own context.

All the previous learning students have is useful too in order to construct and guide new learning. This was the comment of one of my students from history class when I was leaving the classroom. It is important to involved students in this way so they can feel part of the construction of the content in every class. Every comment can make the difference because at some point students´ examples can be more understandable for their classmates.

About the concrete and theoretical context, I consider important the alignment between theory and practice. Something that is not practice cannot be meaningful; for example, we can take a theoretic driving course and understand every concept, but if it is not practiced we cannot take control of that leaning in a real driving situation. It happens the same with students of any subject. In English for example, the student already knows how to structure grammatically one sentence in simple past and answers correctly several exercises, but the teacher asks –What did you do yesterday? And the student does not know how to answer orally, it is noticeable the lack of oral production and oral practice.

The relationship between the teacher and the learners

In his sixth letter, Freire focus our attention in the relationship between the teacher and the learners.
There is a particular point that caught my attentions from this letter. The idea falls in the following sentence: “We could know our students as ‘just students’, or we could know our students as ‘humans’.”
In my personal interpretation, knowing  a student  just as a student is when we become aware of our students’ performance inside the classroom. On the other hand, knowing a student as a human, I understand, is when we get to know how they perceive themselves and how they perceive others; how they perform outside the classroom with their context. This is, the knowledge our students possess and how they use it to interact with their environment that surrounds them, their friends and their families.
Getting to know students or even, connecting with them is not always easy. First, there is the time factor. Secondly, having our students to trust in us takes its time. I usually keep in mind a phrase from a teacher, John Rassias, referred to the sincerity that must exist while building any relationship: “Without the truth, everything fails…
When we get to know more than our students ’ names and grades, we, teachers, give them a sense that we care about them. We become aware some of the learners’ abilities we did not know before - abilities that sometimes are not possible to notice during our lessons. Even more, we can know the people who are constantly supporting our students and how important this is for them.
But how this exchange of information occurs? As I have referred before, communication between teacher-student has its origin in the confidence generated by the sincerity.

Do you have the necessary qualities to become a better teacher? Think about it.

During the fourth letter of “Cartas a quien pretende enseñar” by Paulo Freire (2004) I really thought about some characteristics many of my most influent teachers have. Why? Because through this letter, Freire mentioned some qualities teachers who want to be better should have. Let’s not take this as a magic recipe! Instead, as a reflection of the qualities we have shown to our students.  First of all, he talks about   humility. I have worked in a community from Teziutlán, Puebla (located in Mexico) and I can say that many people from communities show a great humility. As teacher, and overall if you work in a community, you should consider what Freire mentioned “Nobody knows everything- nobody ignores everything” (2004, p. 60). As teacher you are your students’ light but we do not have to take this, and turn it into vanity. Trust me! If you show them vanity, they do not make you part of their communities. If you are humble, you win their confidence and that is the greatest gift you can receive, because you can know your students and their families so much better. You can listen, as Freire says, to anybody who looks for you without caring their intellectual level. I remember that the most significant teachers for me, where the ones who were always able to listen to me, the ones who did not pretend to be more than anyone.
Another important quality is lovingness. I consider your students feel when you love them, when you care about them. The people (included me) who love teaching, see this process of teaching and learning as a journey of different emotion, because of the good and difficult days. That lovingness is what makes you go forward.
Another quality is courage to face any obstacle. I know some days are harder, even worst to me when I feel my students are lost in certain topics. When you see bad notes, you have to find that courage that makes you grow and help your students. Another important quality is tolerance, and as Freire describes it, tolerance is a virtue. Now that I am in a classroom, I know why he calls it that way. It really is a virtue. You have to be open to live different situations, to live with different people, to respect their ideas, and that’s when tolerance plays an important role. If you are not tolerant, how your students are going to have confidence on you? We don’t want them to be afraid of us. But look! We should not confuse this term, and let our students do whatever they want in the classroom. In addition, being a better teacher also consider security. The security to take decisions in class. The better decisions are the ones which are meditated. During my short experience, I have seen that the best decisions in the school are the ones taken with your students. For example, the rules of the class. We took together the decisions of what was the best for our class (talking about the rules). Together we did our bylaw, now my students  are conscious of the consequence of their acts; they know what they have to obey.
Following with these qualities, during the fifth letter Freire talks about the first day of classes (That first day when you are in front of a group of students), and why do I say following with qualities? Because he talks about the fear we face that first day, that fear we turn into courage. I remember how nervous I was when I looked at my students for the first time. But guess what? For me, each day with them, it is like the first, I am always nervous and exited to give my class.  Why do I always feel that fear? I consider I feel it because I am afraid they do not learn what I teach them, I am afraid they do not see how important and significant what they are learning is. For this reason, every day I push me to do a better job. Maybe some days are difficult than others, some days I feel more fear but the most important is to never give up. So, do you have the necessary qualities to be a better teacher?
