REFLEXION During the first part of the reading “Cartas a quien pretende enseñar” by Freire I felt like in a wave of opinions and feelings. Because nowadays, it is sad to see the poor reality of the role teachers have, but it is heartwarming to see that even when this role is not valued, there are people like us (PEMs) who still having the hope of a better education. First of all, Freire pretends to defend teachers’ identity. Why? Because this is something we all have seen, the role teachers have in the society is totally devalued because of the low salaries, bad life quality, low self-esteem, teaching conditions, less opportunities of growth, and no recognition. However, if this is true why there are teachers; overall why are people, like us PEMs, who want to teach other people? According to Freire all is because of love. We can pass throw difficulties but we love to help our students. However, we have to be conscious that being a teacher is something pleasurable (I think this refers to enjoy each day of our classes) and demanding (be prepared for any challenged). Being a teacher is a profession, you have to study to become a “good teacher”. I consider that for this reason we should be called PEMs and not teachers because most of the PEMs have not this profile. As PEMs we know teaching is not easy, overall if you did not study to become a teacher. Freire mentioned empirical teachers. I consider somehow PEMs are empirical teachers, each day we pass in the school help us to grow (even when the program Teach for Mexico says we should not be called like that, for many students we are teachers). On the other hand, something that concerns me is the situation of Brazil where people call “aunts” to teachers. It was really nice to see how people in Brazil consider teachers in a more sentimental way, they see them as heroes, but when I realized it was just a trap, in order teachers do not do walkouts, it was like if teachers were not considered with dignity, as if they were machines. In conclusion, teachers should be treated with respect, value and dignity, not just with sentimentalism as “aunts”.
